Facility and Technologies Expansion Boost Capacity & Capabilities

September 8, 2004

Urgent Design & Manufacturing (UDM), located in Lapeer, MI and specialists in rapid prototyping of formed parts, fabrications and assemblies, has unveiled an energetic plans for a major facilities expansion, one that will more than double the size of the existing plant. The company will add approximately 50,000 sq. ft. to its existing 48,000 sq. ft. plant, allowing for the addition of more and larger fabricating and forming equipment, such as presses and welding systems. The new section is designed with ceiling heights that will accommodate machines, typically stamping presses, of up to 40 feet high. The expansion is expected to boost employment at the facility by 20 associates and will not only increase the output capacity of the facility, but also, with the anticipated acquisitions of new equipment, grow the range of services offered.

According to Alan Peterson, Vice President of its parent firm, 3-Dimensional Services (Rochester Hills, MI), a pivotal reason behind the expansion was a need to increase the firm’s capabilities to fabricate and build entire vehicle frame assemblies.

“Our customers’ product designs and engineering processes are changing at a rapid pace to keep up with market demands and global competition,” says Mr. Peterson. “In response, our expansion in size and subsequent investment in manufacturing technologies is necessary, as a rapid prototyper, to meet these needs now and the requirements of a growing customer base.”

UDM began operations in 2000 as an extension and broadening of 3-Dimensional Services’ capabilities, with UDM specializing in the fabrication, forming and assembly of larger prototype parts— truck and automotive frames, body panels, appliance shells, etc.

Currently, UDM offers hydroforming and associated CNC tube bending, 3-axis and 5-axis laser cutting and welding, waterjet cutting, robotic and manual welding, along with CNC machining plus a large stamping and forming department that includes 5000, 1650, 1250 and 1000 ton presses. There are also numerous CAD and engineering workstations.

The efforts of UDM, a second affiliate, Urgent Plastic Services (specializing in prototype plastic, injection-molded parts), and 3-Dimensional Services are combined to offer comprehensive rapid prototyping services that encompass virtually all manufacturing processes and technologies.
